Located within Parkland Memorial Hospital, the poison center is the area's only certified regional poison center with access to information on 750,000 toxic substances and drugs.

Specially-trained registered nurses, pharmacists and paramedics, backed up by physicians and a board of more than 60 expert consultants from the community, enable the poison center to respond quickly and effectively to the 250 emergency calls it receives each day.

Most of the poison center calls are from families where unattended children have been accidentally exposed to toxic materials. Although the majority of poisonings can be treated at home, serious cases must receive emergency care. Whenever our staff determines emergency care is needed, we will refer you to the nearest hospital. Whether the patient is treated at home or at a hospital, the poison center monitors the patient's progress, making three to four follow-up calls for each case.
