When a poisoning or drug overdose occurs, remember these
steps:
Don't panic Call the North Texas Poison Center at
800.222.1222. Find the substance that was ingested or its container.
Tell the poison information specialist:
- Victim's name, age, weight and symptoms
- Name or type of product or substance ingested
- Amount ingested
- Time of ingestion
Facts to Consider
Poisoning is the fifth leading cause of accidental death
in the United States. And the majority of these deaths are children. Children
swallow pills, household cleaners, insecticides, paints, plants and many
other products around the home. In Dallas County alone, there are more
than 100 poison and drug-related deaths each year and that number is on
the rise.
Besides functioning as a poison information provider
and case management service, the North Texas Poison Center serves as an
early warning system to alert health care professionals to environmental
hazards, new patterns of drug abuse and problems of drug misuse. The center
is also available to consult with employees and industry leaders facing
chemical exposure problems in the workplace.
