Children are often hidden victims of abuse
When children are hurt or abused, they may learn to keep the abuse secret – to push the experiences and feelings back into a corner of their minds. Adults around them may not realize how much they are hurting.
Children who have been abused or experienced violence in the home may have strong feelings that can be demonstrated through:
- Sudden changes in behavior
- Crying more than usual or becoming overly dependent
- Acting younger than they are
- Acting out in school or at home
- Appearing depressed or withdrawn
- Having nightmares or wetting the bed
- Becoming more aggressive with family and friends
- Acting out sexually with toys or other children
Adults often don't know what to do. It can be frustrating and confusing to know how to respond to a child who has been abused, or one who lives in a violent or abusive home.
Children and families do not have to be alone
Abuse does not have to remain hidden in corners. Well–trained child/youth counselors can help children and families heal from abuse by providing:
- Counseling and emotional support for children of school age
- Play therapy for preschool or young school-aged children
- Information on the effects of abuse/violence for parents or guardians
- Behavioral training for children
- Parenting training for parents/guardians
The abuse does not have to be recent. The VIP/Rape Crisis Center serves children who have experienced abuse in the past, as well as those who have been abused recently.
