Taking the first step to get help for a personal situation may be difficult. You may ask yourself, 'Should I talk about this to someone outside my circle of family or friends?'
To make this decision easier, it may help to understand what counseling is, and what counselors can and cannot do.
Counseling is basically a conversation between two people. It is a relationship between a person with special training who cares and a person who may be having a difficult life experience. It is aimed at helping you become stronger, happier and more independent.
A counselor has a lot of experience with people in situations similar to yours and may be able to ask questions or make observations that your immediate family or friends may not.
Counseling may last for a few weeks or several months, depending on the client's needs.
Counselors can help you to:
- Understand the problem
- Decide what's important to you
- Come up with ideas about what to do next
- Put your feelings and needs into words
- Find your own strengths and the resources in your environment
- Recognize beliefs, habits, and attitudes that may be hurting you
- See things from a new point of view
- Make the changes you want to make
