Prenatal Classes

Preparation for Childbirth Classes
Childbirth classes help prepare expectant families for the upcoming birth of their baby. These classes teach what to expect during pregnancy, as well as how to manage labor and delivery. Husbands and labor support partners are encouraged to attend.

Saturday English classes (series of two classes)
When: 2nd and 3rd Saturday, monthly at Parkland Hospital
Time: 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Weekend

Spanish classes (series of two classes)
When: 4th Saturday and 4th Sunday, monthly at Parkland Hospital
Time: 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Breastfeeding Classes
Parkland offers a monthly breastfeeding class for expectant parents. Classes are taught by international board-certified lactation consultants. The classes provide education on the benefits of breastfeeding and will help prepare you for many common breastfeeding challenges that you may face. Participants will also learn how to access breastfeeding support, if needed.

Spanish class: 1:00 - 4:00 p.m.

Lactation Services
Parkland has a team of international board certified lactation consultants and breastfeeding educators who provide assistance to new mothers while they are in the hospital. Our team assists mothers and infants with routine breastfeeding and breastfeeding challenges that may occur. There is no cost for this service. To arrange for a visit from a member of our lactation team, please contact the nurse on the postpartum unit.

Gestational Diabetes Class
This class is designed for women who are diagnosed with diabetes while they are pregnant. Registered nurses provide basic information about diabetes and how to manage it at home. Dieticians provide information about nutritional considerations. These classes are offered by referral from your Parkland health care provider. There is no cost for these classes.

Precious Pearls Bereavement Program
The Precious Pearls Bereavement Program is designed for families whose babies have died at Parkland. We recognize that grief is a normal healthy response to loss and will provide bereavement care to families through a professional team approach. The program aims to help patients and their families begin to cope with the loss of their baby. In addition, the program offers opportunities for follow-up care after the loss of the baby. There is no cost for this service. The nurse on the postpartum unit should be contacted for a referral, if a family experiences the loss of a baby.
