A Message from Parkland
As I watched the election returns come in, my first
thought was to offer my heartfelt gratitude to the thousands of voters
who said yes to the need for a new Parkland. But the more I thought
about it, the more I realized I should actually congratulate you. You
have not simply voted for Parkland, you have made an investment in
the health of your community and its future vitality. When you consider
future lives saved and illnesses prevented, the value of the successful
bond election becomes about much more than the $747 million earmarked
for a new facility.
Your vote of confidence is exhilarating. But the
hard work is just beginning. We need a building that is economical
for the future, environmentally sound, efficient for staff and, most
important, a place of healing for patients. We have already been working
with the leadership of Dallas County and the Parkland Board of Managers
to create a design for this new facility that will bring the greatest
value to the taxpayer. Planning has begun on the first stages, and
we are in the process of assembling a team of designers and planners
who will draw up initial ideas for the new buildings. Careful stewardship
now will help ensure that construction phases can be executed on time
and within budget.
Studies show that Dallas County is poised for such
dynamic growth that we must be strategic in our approach, bold in our
long-range vision and frugal in our design for the future. The dynamics
of this community will demand that we continually stay in touch with
growth and the challenge of change. We must continue to plan and help
facilitate change with frequent assessments and strategic planning.
That means we must build a hospital that's flexible,
one that can be built up and out, and that allows expansion options
for growth. We will continue to plan while studying demography, epidemiology,
and the changing conditions in which we live and work. This approach
is not just for Parkland, it's in the best interest of the entire community.
Too often we fail to account for the cost of inaction.
The consequence of doing nothing is a price too high to pay. Congratulations
- and thanks - to those of you who share our vision for the future
of a healthy Dallas.
