Parkland’s VIP/Rape Crisis Center and Injury Prevention Center receive ‘Healthcare Hero’ awards
Two programs of Parkland Health & Hospital System have been recognized by the DFW Alliance for Healthcare Excellence with 2014 “Healthcare Hero” awards. The Injury Prevention Center (IPC) of Greater Dallas at Parkland received the Healthcare Quality Hero Award and Parkland’s Victim Intervention Program (VIP)/Rape Crisis Center garnered the Healthcare Access Hero Award.
The Alliance for Healthcare Excellence is an association of health industry leaders working together to improve our nation’s healthcare system. The Alliance promotes access to quality, affordable healthcare through education, networking, cooperation and collaboration.
“The Alliance recognizes community organizations that provide unique and exceptional services that go above and beyond in serving unmet needs. The award winners for 2014 offer a unique array of outstanding community services to meet the needs of our citizens,” said Beverly Leake, President of the DFW Alliance for Healthcare Excellence.
“We are proud of this award that recognizes the IPC’s commitment to community safety,” said Shelli Stephens-Stidham, Director, Injury Prevention Center of Greater Dallas. “For 20 years, the IPC has been dedicated to preventing injuries and violence by implementing only proven effective or promising interventions that change conditions, which leads to improved community safety. Our commitment to implementing evidence-informed strategies and evaluation has made a life-saving difference for countless Dallas-area residents.”
One of the IPC’s successful initiatives has been the installation of more than 34,000 smoke alarms through Operation Installation, helping reduce fire deaths by 63 percent in targeted neighborhoods and 48 percent in the city of Dallas. Other IPC accomplishments include helping reduce motor vehicle crash death rates in Dallas by 38 percent; distribution of more than 21,000 car seats to families in need; safety inspections of more than 4,200 car seats for correct installation; and numerous national and international scientific presentations and publications.
Parkland’s VIP/Rape Crisis Center was named 2104 Healthcare Access Hero of the Year, recognizing exceptional contribution toward improving access to healthcare for the underprivileged. The Center helps those who have experienced violence, providing crisis support, counseling and advocacy. The specially-trained staff treats the victim’s immediate needs and goes a step further by assessing a victim’s safety and need for additional resources, including information on the effects of abuse and violence, help with responses to sexual assault or domestic violence, and documents to support legal or civil actions.
“We are honored by this award that acknowledges our team’s dedication to the health and safety of all of our patients,” said Melissa Reilly, Director of the VIP/Rape Crisis Center at Parkland. “Our advocates are here 24/7 to assist people in complete confidence to ensure their safety and their privacy.”
Parkland advocates offer 24-hour response to victims of violence who are cared for at Parkland, information and referrals for protective orders, emergency shelter information, help completing Crime Victims Compensation applications, referrals to legal services, court accompaniment for clients of the VIP/Rape Crisis Center and help documenting the abuse. Services are free to Dallas County residents and are offered to women, men, teens and children 4 years and older.
