New technology improves experience for patients, visitors
Technology at the new Parkland hospital campus is all about making everything easier for patients and visitors, and that starts from the moment they enter.
The new facility has high-tech welcome kiosks to assist outpatients when they check into the Women & Infants Specialty Health (WISH) clinics for their appointments. And, wayfinding kiosks in the lobby of the main hospital building help guide visitors and families to specific destinations in the massive 2.1 million square-foot structure.
“The kiosks are intended to improve the overall patient and visitor experience,” said Joe Longo, Vice President of Information Technology at Parkland. “These kiosks are specifically engineered and purpose-built for the demanding environments of hospitals and clinics.”
The wayfinding kiosks located in the lobby of new Parkland have easy-to-operate touchscreens in both English and Spanish that provide maps of each floor, directions that can be sent by text, email or can be photographed, ‘quick buttons’ for frequently visited points in the hospital, as well as a search function for specific rooms.
Created specifically for new Parkland, the kiosks are built on the same platform as the digital media management system and the in-room patient experience system used in the new facility. This allows for better control of all media throughout the building. Parkland is one of the first all-digital hospitals in the U.S.
“The system is designed for ease of use, speed and fast delivery of pertinent information and it’s also compliant with all of our physical security standards,” Longo said.
In the nearby WISH clinic tower, check-in kiosks have been installed to help ease and speed the process for patients arriving for appointments.
“Returning patients will be able to check in for their appointment quickly. They will not have to stand in line to talk to a front desk representative,” said Scott Sentirmay, Project Manager for the new Parkland kiosks.
Patients will be able to update their demographic information, such as address, phone numbers and emergency contacts. They can also use the electronic kiosks to pay outstanding balances and copays, as well as view upcoming appointments and insurance information on file for them.
Sentirmay said the kiosks, which are wheelchair accessible and adjustable, are manufactured by Connected Technology Solutions (CTS) and run on the Epic Welcome module software. Parkland uses the Epic electronic health record system, including the free patient portal “MyChart” that gives patients secure online access to their medical information at any time.
“Using the kiosk is intuitive and patient education should not be needed,” Sentirmay said. “The kiosks will free up front desk staff to focus on patients who need additional help checking in. Our patients will always have the opportunity to check in with someone in person should they choose not to use the kiosks.”
Sentirmay said patients will be able to use their MyChart security question to login to the kiosk. If they don’t have a security question, they will be able to set up security questions the first time they use the kiosks.
“In addition to being ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant, these devices offer privacy screens, palm vein readers, electronic signature pads and credit card readers,” Longo said.
Ten kiosks will be operational when the new Parkland opens to patients on Aug. 20. They are located on the second, third and fourth floors of the WISH tower. Additional kiosks are planned for the Ron J. Anderson, MD Clinic when it opens in 2016.
