Parkland, Injury Prevention Center project focuses on health, safety
A group of young Dallas residents has one goal in mind – making their community a better place to live. With cameras in hand, they hope PHOTOVOICE will help them make their vision a reality.
PHOTOVOICE is a joint collaboration between Parkland Health & Hospital System, the Injury Prevention Center of Greater Dallas, based at Parkland, Vickery Meadow Youth Development Foundation and the Eagles Scholars Program. The project is comprised of a five-week course where students entering the seventh, eighth or ninth grade in the fall are trained in basic photography, pedestrian safety and advocacy.
“PHOTOVOICE doesn’t just teach students photography skills during the summer, it aims to educate them on how they can improve their community,” said Shelli Stephens-Stidham, Director of the Injury Prevention Center. “This project helps young people learn to better recognize health and other safety issues in their everyday lives.”
During the course students take field trips around the Vickery Meadow neighborhood to identify and photograph potentially dangerous conditions. The students pinpoint issues such as cracked sidewalks, or no sidewalks at all, lack of crosswalks, obstructed traffic signs and distracted drivers. The project also includes a session on how to work with city officials to bring about the changes they want to see.
PHOTOVOICE began in 2011 and the highlight of every summer is a reception the students host for their parents, city officials and community stakeholders. At the event students will showcase the photographs taken during their field trips. Students will also lead guests on an outdoor photo walk in areas where they have identified hazardous issues, and then the students will present possible solutions to the problems.
This year’s reception will take place from 10 – 11:30 a.m., July 18 at Tasby Middle School, 7001 Fair Oaks Ave., Dallas, 75231.
“One of our goals is to let students know they have a voice and they can use it to inspire change in their community,” Stephens-Stidham said.
The Injury Prevention Center of Greater Dallas was established in 1994 by area health, government and business leaders to create an injury- and violence-free Dallas.
