Equipment Repair=Quality Care

As Parkland prepares to construct a new building across Harry Hines, we’re also rebuilding on the inside too, finding ways to become more efficient and be better stewards of our resources. Clinical Engineering is a shining example of this as they have combined departments and standardized processes as they maintain our medical equipment throughout the hospital.

Just a few years ago the department didn’t even exist. Equipment inventory and maintenance was handled by individual departments, some of it contracted out. But under the leadership of Director Tom Stanfield, Clinical Engineering began operation in 2007. They’re now the one-stop shop for equipment inspection and repair, as well as assessing and controlling the clinical and physical risks of fixed and portable equipment used in the hospital.

“We consolidated from six biomed service groups into one department, and from six different software systems to one standardized database,” Tom said. “Sharing resources, standardizing records and eliminating duplicated contracts has allowed us to be much more efficient.”

It’s saved them some money as well. In Fiscal Year 2007, the department’s first year of operation, it was $1.45 million under budget. In Fical Year 2009, they were $140,000 under budget. But just as important as the financial savings are the improvements in patient care that are possible when equipment is properly maintained.
