Did you know that your child’s overall health can affect their ability to learn? Many situations like the common cold, the need for glasses or bullying can cause your child to miss school days. The sooner you notice a problem, the sooner you can correct it. Here are some things to look out for:
Common cold- The sniffles are no fun and children can fall behind in school for taking too many sick days. Make sure your child is eating healthy, getting enough sleep and up to date on vaccinations.
Bullying- Name calling, teasing and physical abuse are all examples of bullying. If you notice big changes in your child’s mood or behavior, ask your child if they are having problems in school. Also, talk to their teachers and school counselors for help.
Poor vision (unable to see clearly)- Poor vision can make it hard for your child to see what is on the board causing them to lose focus. If your child squints their eyes to read, they may need to wear glasses. Annual eye exams can detect vision problems early.
Scoliosis (curve of the spine)- It is important identify back problems in children as soon as possible. An early diagnosis of scoliosis makes it easier to treat the condition. Signs of scoliosis include, poor posture (the body position when sitting or standing), uneven hips and shoulders, back pain and leg pain.
Talk with your child’s healthcare provider if you notice any of the above symptoms. You can find a list of our Youth & Family Centers on page 1. To book an appointment, please call the appointment line at 214-266-1257.
