Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins has appointed Marjorie Petty to serve on the Parkland Health & Hospital System Board of Managers. Petty replaces Natalie Jenkins Sorrell whose term expired.
Each member of the Commissioners Court appoints two individuals to serve on the Parkland Board. In addition, the Commissioners Court names one member of the board collectively to serve in an “at-large” position. Board members serve staggered three-year terms, with as near as possible to one-third of the members’ terms expiring each year.
Petty served as federal Region VI Director of the Department of Health and Human Services in President Barack Obama's administration from the first year, December 2009 through to the end of the second term, January 2017. During her tenure, she worked to implement the Affordable Care Act throughout the Southwest which contained 30% of the nation's major ACA markets. At HHS, she oversaw 15 operating divisions and over 350 employees who provided programs with five states (Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Arkansas) and 68 Federally Recognized Tribes. She built partnerships with state and local governments and with professional and community-based associations. She was involved in advocacy for the Native American Tribes, for solutions on such issues as Unaccompanied Minors on the Texas/New Mexico Borders, and for the expansion of health outreach through hospital, medical and public health delivery systems.
She brought both public and private experience to her HHS role, first as the President of the Board of Delta Dental Insurance Company of Kansas on which she served for 10 years, and then as the Director of Consumer Protection for the public utility commission in Kansas. She has provided strategy and technical assistance as a contractor for universities, for profit and not-for-profit entities and for governments on health and human services.
Previous elected offices include three terms as a Senator in the Kansas Legislature, a term as Deputy Mayor of Topeka, the capital of Kansas, and President of the State Association of Commissioners and Council Members.
Petty earned a Master of Science in Education/Counseling degree from the University of Kansas in Lawrence, KS, her Juris Doctorate from Washburn University School of Law in Topeka, and a Bachelor of Science from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth.
