Posted: 7/23/2020

Great things happen every day at Parkland. The Parkland News Flash is our way to share the positive news about Parkland's premier services and showcase our participation in upcoming public events. We welcome you to share this biweekly e-newsletter on your Facebook page or forward it to your friends, family and neighbors so they can see the vital role Parkland plays in keeping our community healthy.

Couple recovers from COVID-19 together

WFAA-TV (ABC) shared the story of Robert and Janice Beecham, a couple who recovered from COVID-19 together while Janice battled cancer. Robert, a two-time stroke survivor, credits Parkland's Satyam Nayak, MD for helping him return home in time to celebrate his 46th wedding anniversary. Robert was Dr. Nayak's first successful COVID-19 discharge and continues to be an inspiration to Parkland's team.

Thank you campaign supports frontline work against COVID-19

Energy Transfer generously gave $100,000 in support of Parkland Foundation's Public Health Prepardness Fund, according to MySweetCharity.com. Energy Transfer initiated The Dallas Healthcare Heroes campaign in which individuals across the nation were asked to submit videos expressing their gratitude for healthcare workers. For every video submitted, Energy Transfer donated $50 to Parkland's Public Health Preparedness Fund, which will help Parkland respond to the most urgent needs that come with delivering quality, compassionate care in Dallas County during the current COVID-19 pandemic.

Increase in asymptomatic carriers

As testing for COVID-19 continues, data shows 1 out of 20 people that test positive for COVID-19 do not show any symptoms of the virus. Parkland's Chief Medical Officer, Joseph Chang, MD told KDFW-TV (Fox 4) how he's seen an increase in asymptomatic carriers. He also shared his concern for large group gatherings including 20 or more people.

Healthcare workers saving the day

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Parkland healthcare workers have been faced with difficult challenges. InStyle, highlighted 50 healthcare workers including Parkland nurse Dolores Diaz, MSN, RN who has been helping to set up and train teams at the drive-through COVID-19 testing centers.

Managing pregnancy during a pandemic

While pregnant women are not considered at higher risk of contracting COVID-19, Parkland's Emily Adhikari, MD, talked with KERA-FM over about concerns pregnant women may have, such as passing the virus to their child. She also shared with OHSOnline what measures Parkland is taking to ensure women have a safe delivery.

Recommendations for waiting at COVID-19 testing sites

Testing for COVID-19 has increased and the wait times at various drive-through and walk-up testing sites throughout Dallas County can be long. Longer wait times mean spending more time in the car or outside in the elements. Dallas Weekly shared Parkland's recommendations for those waiting at COVID-19 testing sites.
