Parkland receives TSHP Pharmacy Residency Award recognizing quality, safety

Posted: 4/14/2014

Parkland Health & Hospital System received the 2014 Texas Society Health-System Pharmacist (TSHP) Residency Program Excellence Award at the TSHP annual seminar April 11 in Houston. The award recognizes a pharmacy residency program with an outstanding track record of training pharmacy residents and that continuously offers a positive and flourishing environment for their residents in training.

According to Deanna Menesses, CAE, Executive Director, Texas Society of Health-System Pharmacists, “This honor recognizes Parkland Health & Hospital System as a role model for excellence in patient care to other hospitals and their residency programs.”

“We are honored by this recognition that acknowledges the quality of Parkland’s pharmacy residency program,” said Vivian B. Johnson, Pharm.D., MBA, FASHP, Parkland’s Vice President of Pharmacy Services. “Since its launch in 1987, our program has been dedicated to excellence, both in training and patient care. It is our goal to continuously evaluate and improve pharmacy services to ensure the highest level of safety and to instill a culture of commitment to quality in our pharmacy residents.”

The Parkland PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency Program is a 12-month postgraduate training program that centers on expanding the knowledge and skills necessary to become an independent clinical pharmacy practitioner. The program is designed to comply with the standards established by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. Every year, six residents graduate after they are exposed to every aspect of adult medical and surgical care. The core rotations of the program consist of: Internal Medicine 1 and 2, Critical Care 1, Administration, Drug Information, Medication Safety, Surgery, Ambulatory and Ambulatory/Critical Care 2. The Parkland pharmacy residency program has grown to include a total of four different programs – Psychiatry (PGY2), Primary Care (PGY2), Pharmacy Administration (PGY2), as well as Pharmacy Practice Residency (PGY1).

Applicants for the award were evaluated in six areas: The residency program must use new and innovative techniques to help train and educate their trainees. The formality of the system should continuously improve the program to ensure it offers the best environment for their residents. The overall environment where the training occurs should be conducive and attentive to the residents’ training needs and serve as a role model for excellence in patient care. The program must have a sustained record of having a successful training program where graduates make great achievements in the pharmacy practice development. The residency program should lead the pharmacy department on a path to excellence within pharmacy services and contribute to the new development or expansion of pharmacy services. Lastly, the Residency Program should continuously support and encourage the achievements and growth of residency preceptors and program directors.

For more information about this award, please visit the TSHP Website at www.tshp.org. For more information about the Pharmacy Residency Program at Parkland, please contact Steven Carlisle, Pharm.D. at 214.590.8714.
