Free event on Sept. 26 open to public
Coping with diabetes isn’t easy, but according to experts at Parkland Health & Hospital System, it is possible to enjoy a healthy, active life by taking control of the disease, rather than allowing it to control you. To help educate individuals and their family members who are dealing with diabetes, Parkland is hosting its 3rd annual Diabetes Awareness Fair from 9 a.m. to noon, Thursday, Sept. 26 at its Southeast Dallas Health Center, 9202 Elam Rd., Dallas 75217.
The free event will include helpful information about living with diabetes, such as:
• Coping with diabetes
• Foot care
• Nutrition tips on maintaining a healthy weight and meal planning
• Exercise and diabetes
• Understanding your diabetes medications
• Eye health
Those who attend will also hear from a Parkland chef who will talk about healthy cooking. Free giveaways and healthy snacks will be provided.
“Diabetes is a serious public health issue in Dallas as it is throughout the nation,” said Luigi Meneghini, MD, Executive Director of the Global Diabetes Program at Parkland and Professor of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center. “It remains the seventh leading cause of death in the U.S. Our goal is to educate, support and encourage a healthy lifestyle free of disease complications for people with diabetes.”
The Healthy Living with Diabetes Education Program at Parkland is recognized by the American Diabetes Association. Parkland also offers a website about diabetes in both English and Spanish at www.parklanddiabetes.com, with easy-to-access information about preventing and living with diabetes, including risk factors, nutrition, exercise, medication, support groups, a diabetes blog and more.
