Losing a loved one is always a traumatic
experience, whether it is sudden or expected.
To help lessen this burden, the Parkland Pastoral Care department provides support for bereaved families. Kyong Hee Kim,
Mdiv., BCC, Bereavement Coordinator, chairs
the Bereavement committee, which is made up
of employees from across the hospital that help
make this service possible.
The most visible aspect of the program are
the memorial services, held three times per year
for patients and families and once per year for
employees. However, more goes on behind the
scenes through individual support and small
group interaction.
“All families of deceased patients at Parkland
receive a condolence letter and a grief handbook
at the time of death, and receive ‘Hope through
Healing’ grief support resource materials
periodically over the coming year,” Kyong said.
“We also facilitate grief support groups multiple
times per month.”
Kyong leads several English-speaking support
groups, and a Spanish-speaking support group is
led by Chaplain Carlos De Oliveira, Dmin., BCC.
Individual grief counseling is also available.
