Parkland, Injury Prevention Center project focuses on health, safety
As the summer’s sweltering sun beats down on Dallas streets, a group of dedicated young people – cameras in hand – are working hard to make their community a better place to live.
That’s the role of PHOTOVOICE, a joint collaboration between Parkland Health & Hospital System, the Injury Prevention Center of Greater Dallas, based at Parkland, the Vickery Meadow Youth Development Foundation and the Eagles Scholars Program. During the five-week course, PHOTOVOICE participants – all of them students entering the seventh, eighth or ninth grade this fall – are trained in basic photography, pedestrian safety and advocacy.
“Through this project, students learn to better recognize health and safety issues, including many that these young people see every day on their way to school,” said Shelli Stephens-Stidham, Director of the Injury Prevention Center of Greater Dallas. “The goal is not only for them to learn new skills during the summer, but also to learn how they can help their community.”
Part of the course involves taking field trips around the Vickery Meadow neighborhood to snap photos of potentially dangerous conditions such as cracked sidewalks, or no sidewalks at all, lack of crosswalks, obstructed traffic signs and distracted drivers. The project also includes a session on how to work with city officials to bring about changes through engaging, informing and organizing community members.
PHOTOVOICE began in 2011 and the highlight of every summer is a reception for the students’ parents, city officials and community stakeholders when students give presentations about their photos and talk about the health and safety hazards discovered during their field trips. The presentations will be followed by a brief walking tour to highlight some of the neighborhood problems for city officials.
This year’s reception will take place from 10 – 11:30 a.m., Friday, July 15 at Tasby Middle School, 7001 Fair Oaks Ave., Dallas, 75231.
“The presentations and neighborhood tour help the students make their case to city and community leaders so that policy changes can be made and the neighborhood become safer for everyone,” Stephens-Stidham said. “The students have learned that they have a voice and responsibility to speak out about needs in their community.”
The Injury Prevention Center of Greater Dallas was established in 1994 by area health, government and business leaders to create an injury- and violence-free Dallas. For more information on PHOTOVOICE, please visit www.injurypreventioncenter.org.
