Recognizes use of health information, technology to improve patient care
Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) has recognized Parkland Health & Hospital System with the 2017 HIMSS Enterprise Davies Award of Excellence. The award recognizes outstanding achievement of organizations that have utilized healthcare information and technology to substantially improve patient outcomes and value.
Parkland’s Outpatient Parenteral Antibiotic Therapy (OPAT) program was selected for the recognition as an outstanding example of improving care delivery by implementing innovations through advanced technology and health information systems. Parkland designed the program to allow patients access to antibiotic therapy and treatment in the comfort of their own homes, a new care delivery model that helps both patients and providers avoid the expense, potential complications and inconvenience of hospitalization.
The OPAT program’s goal was to empower patients to actively participate in their own care and equip them with the knowledge and skills to do so in their home setting. Thousands of patients have benefitted from services offered in Parkland’s OPAT clinic. An added benefit has been the reduction in hospital stays and a savings to the health system in the millions of dollars.
“These are patients who would have historically been in the hospital for another four to six weeks with IV antibiotics,” said Kavita Bhavan, MD, Medical Director of the Infectious Diseases OPAT Clinic at Parkland and Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center. “Our patient model is unique in that we are teaching our patients to safely self-administer IV antibiotics at home in a resource-limited safety net setting. We have found that, empowered with the appropriate skill set, patients enrolled in the self-care process have received treatment that is both safe and effective and resulted in better clinical outcomes than standard of care.”
“Technology is a key component to delivering safe, high quality care to patients in the United States,” stated Fred Cerise, MD, MPH, Parkland CEO. “I am proud of the collaboration Parkland’s IT staff and clinical informatics group have created with our clinical and administrative leaders to improve outcomes and service in a way that puts patients at the center of everything we do. Their work keeps people healthy in North Texas and beyond. I also appreciate HIMSS’s commitment to recognizing outstanding contributions in the vital field of health information and technology.”
“As a public health hospital serving the medically underserved population of the Dallas Metroplex, Parkland faces unique population health challenges,” said Jonathan French, CPHIMSS, senior director of quality and patient safety at HIMSS. “Parkland uses unique health information and technology approaches to ensure improved care plan adherence and outcomes and keep patients out of the hospital. HIMSS is proud to recognize Parkland Health & Hospital System as a 2017 Davies Enterprise Award recipient.”
